Expert review Apple iPhone 14
Apple iPhone 14
- This iPhone is smaller than the iPhone Xr / 11 / 14 Plus and you can control it with 1 hand, just like the iPhone 8 / X / Xs / 12.
- With the improved camera sensors, you can take sharper photos in low light.
- Thanks to the Action mode, your videos stay stable when you move a lot while you record.
- The battery doesn't last as long as the battery of the iPhone 14 Plus.
- A charger and earbuds aren't included, so you have to purchase those separately
First impression of the Apple iPhone 14
The iPhone comes in the familiar slim box. When I lift the lid, I see the iPhone 14 in the new blue color. It matches with what I expected of the color. When I take the device out, I find a 1m Lightning to USB cable and a folder with a short manual, a SIM pin, and the Apple sticker. It doesn't include a charger, so you have to buy one separately.
Recognizable design
-
Glass back with Apple logo
-
Sides with matte stainless steel
-
The notch at the top of the screen
The iPhone 14 has the same design as the iPhone 12 and 13. It has the familiar glass back with the Apple logo and flat sides of matte stainless steel. The screen still has the notch at the top with the sensors and selfie camera. The notch is as wide as with the iPhone 13 series. The camera island on the back is a bit bigger, so you need a new case when you switch from an iPhone 12 or 13.
Same chip as the iPhone 13 Pro
The A15 Bionic chip is still a very fast processor. It's the same chip as the one that's in the iPhone 13 Pro. It does run a bit smoother with graphic tasks. I notice that when I play 3D games like Asphalt 9: Legends and I can edit videos more smoothly compared to its predecessor. Thanks to 6GB RAM, I can open more apps and I can continue where I left off. That's useful when I switch between different apps a lot.
Improved selfie camera and action mode
-
The standard and wide-angle lens
-
Taken with the wide-angle lens
There's a standard and wide-angle lens at the back with night mode. Your photos and videos are sharp and detailed during the day and night. I do notice that photos can be overexposed and the color quality isn't that high when taken in low light. With the special Action mode, my videos are less blurry. When I run and record a video, the image stays stable. The improved selfie camera now has an autofocus, so I stay sharply in focus when I move during a FaceTime call.
iPhone 14 Plus with larger screen
The iPhone 14 Plus has an extra large 6.7-inch screen. That's nice when you watch series and play 3D games. Due to this large screen, the device is less compacts and it doesn't completely fit in my pocket. In addition, it's difficult to control the device with 1 hand. The battery lasts 1.5 days with average use. That's half a day more than the iPhone 14. This way, you don't necessarily have to charge your iPhone 14 Plus at the end of the evening.
Conclusion
The iPhone 14 is a device with everything you need. It has good cameras, a high-quality screen, and a 1-day battery life. If you have the iPhone 11 or an older model, the upgrade is worth it. In addition, the iPhone 14 Plus offers the choice of a larger screen and a longer battery life. Do you want the latest functions? Choose the iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max.
