How do you descale the De'Longhi Magnifica?

On this page, we'll show you have to descale your De'Longhi Magnifica. It's important to descale, because you increase the lifespan of your machine this way. Perform this task about every 2 or 3 months. The machine will notify you by itself. Use the De'Longhi water filter, because this prevents a lot of limescale buildup. Without water filter, you have to descale your coffee machine a lot more often. You can use the instructions below for the De'Longhi Magnifica ECAM 20.110.B, ECAM 22.110SB, ECAM 21.117.B, and the ECAM 250.23.SB.

Get started with descaling

In the video, we'll explain step by step how to descale your coffee machine. These are the steps we'll go through:

  • Step 1. Turn on the machine and fill the water tank with the descaler up to 'A' and with water up to 'B'. Start the descaling process.

You need:

  • De'Longhi EcoDecalk descaler
  • 1.8L container

You only have to descale your De'Longhi every 2 to 3 months, as long as you replace the water filter in time. That's because the water filter prevents a large part of the limescale. Don't have a water filter? Keep in mind that you'll have to descale your machine a lot more often. How often depends on the hardness of your tap water and how many cups of coffee you make each day. It's best to use De'Longhi EcoDecalk descaler, because this descaler is specially made for the parts of your machine.

Step 1: start the descaling

Fill the water tank with descaling agent and water
  1. Turn on the machine.
  2. Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container.
  3. Empty the water tank and remove the water filter.
  4. Pour the descaler into the water tank up to the 'A' level and add water up to the 'B' level.
  5. Place the water tank back into the machine.
  6. Put a container under the steam wand and the coffee outlet.
  7. Press the descaler button for 5 seconds.
  8. The steam light blinks. Turn the knob to the 'I' position.
  9. The machine now starts descaling. This takes about 25 minutes.

Step 2: rinse the machine

  1. After 25 minutes, the water tank is empty.
  2. Turn the steam knob back to the 'O' position.
  3. Empty the container that you put under the coffee machine and place it back.
  4. Remove and empty the water tank. Rinse it with tap water.
  5. Fill the water tank with tap water up to 'MAX' and put it back into the machine.
  6. Turn the steam knob to the 'I' mode, so it starts rinsing.
  7. When the water tank is completely empty, turn the steam knob back to the 'O' position.
  8. Fill the water tank and your machine is ready for use.
