Design and screen
Series 7: larger and brighter Always On display
The Apple Watch Series 7 has a larger and brighter display than its predecessors. The black bezel around the screen of the Apple Watch Series 7 is slimmer, so the screen extends further into the watch case. This provides more space to read your messages and health information. Thanks to the Always On display, you'll always see the time and your information without lifting your arm.
SE: smaller screen, no Always On
The Apple Watch SE has the same design that we know from previous Apple Watch models. The display is slightly rounder on the edges than with the Series 7. The black bezel around the screen is a little wider, so the screen is a little smaller. The Apple Watch SE doesn't have an Always On display. As a result, the display turns black if you don't look at it.
Sizes
Series 7: 41 and 45mm
With the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 7, Apple also introduces 2 new sizes. The Apple Watch series 7 is available in 41 and 45mm. This means that the Apple Watch Series 7 is 1mm larger in both sizes than the Apple Watch SE model. Luckily, watch straps that you bought for the Apple Watch Series 6, SE, 5, 4, and 3 still fit on these new sizes.
SE: 40 and 44mm
Just like the older models, the Apple Watch SE is available in 2 sizes, 40 and 44mm. These sizes are the same as of the Apple Watch Series 6, 5, and 4. The watch straps of all previous Series and of the Series 3 fit on the 40 and 44mm watch case.
Health functions
Series 7: saturation monitor, ECG, fall detection
The Apple Watch Series 7 has all the important health functions, like a saturation monitor, an ECG heart rate monitor, and fall detection. The saturation monitor on the Series 7 measures the oxygen level in your blood. If it's lower than 95%, something might be wrong. You might have the flue or a cold. Thanks to the ECG heart rate monitor, you can make cardiograms from your wrist. The Series 7 also has fall detection, just like the Watch SE. This can make you feel save when you go for a run or bike ride.
SE: optical heart rate monitor, fall detection
The Apple Watch SE only has the essential health functions. The smartwatch will track your heart rate throughout the entire day thanks to the optical heart rate monitor. If you keep the Watch SE on at night, it will also track your heart rate when you're sleeping. This will give your more insight in your sleep quality. The Apple Watch SE also has fall detection. Thanks to this function, your emergency contacts will be notified in case you fall and don't respond in time.
Conclusion
Thanks to the larger display and the more extensive health functions, the Apple Watch Series 7 is a good upgrade after the Apple Watch SE. The screen of the Series 7 is larger, so you can easily read your messages. The saturation monitor and ECG heart rate monitor provide a lot of insight in your health. Don't you want all the health functions, or don't you value a larger display? The Apple Watch SE is a suitable choice for you.
