Which lens do you need for your Nikon SLR camera?
Nikon SLR cameras with full-frame sensor
Nikon uses an F mount for SLR cameras. They're divided into FX and DX lenses. The FX lenses are optimized for full-frame Nikon SLR cameras. Because these lenses are made for the largest sensor size, you can also use them on a camera with a smaller APS-C sensor. You won't reach the highest image quality with the lens this way. The advantage of a full-frame lens on your APS-C camera is that you can continue to use the lens if you switch to a full-frame camera.
Nikon SLR cameras with APS-C sensor
DX lenses are suitable for Nikon cameras with an APS-C sensor. This sensor is smaller than a full-frame sensor, which is why it has a 1.5 crop factor. You have to multiply the focal length of the lens with this number. A 50mm lens on an APS-C camera can be compared to an 80mm lens on a full-frame camera. Keep this in mind when you purchase your lens. This is an advantage for sports and wildlife photography, because you can zoom in even further. If you attach a DX lens to a full-frame camera, you'll get black borders around your photo. That's why it's only suitable for APS-C SLR cameras.
