How do you choose a Samsung smartphone fast charger?

You can charge your battery a lot faster if you charge your Samsung smartphone with a fast charger. When you choose a Samsung fast charger, you have to keep a few things in mind. For example, not every smartphone supports fast charging, Samsung uses different types of fast charging, and you need the right cable. Here, we'll help you choose the right fast charger.

Choose a fast charger for Samsung smartphone

Not every Samsung smartphone supports fast charging and Samsung uses different fast charging techniques. Keep the following in mind when you choose a Samsung fast charger:

  • Check if your smartphone supports fast charging.
  • Check which type of Samsung fast charging you need.
  • Choose a charger with the right power.
  • Make sure you have the right cable.
  • Also check the chargers of other brands.

Check if your smartphone supports fast charging

First, check if your smartphone supports fast charging. Since 2019, almost all Samsung smartphones support fast charging. Only more affordable phones that cost around € 150, like the A10, don't always support fast charging. Do you have an older Samsung smartphone? Smartphones from the S series and Note series always support fast charging, devices from the J series can't. For the A series phones, it differs per device. So look this up on the internet or grab your old charger to check if it says Fast Charging. In the overview further down on this page, you can find which type of fast charging your Samsung smartphone supports.

Samsung smartphones without charger

Since a few years, Samsung devices don't include a charger by default anymore. Smartphones without a charger include a USB-C to USB-C cable. This cable doesn't fit on the old USB-A chargers, only on the fast chargers with a USB-C port. So always purchase a USB-C fast charger for your Samsung device without charger, otherwise the included cable won't fit.

Which type of fast charging does my Samsung smartphone have?

Samsung smartphone type Fast charge type
A50 series, A30 series, A70 series Super Fast Charging
A20 series, A10 series Adaptive Fast Charging
New S series (from S20) Super Fast Charging
Old S series (S10 and older) Adaptive Fast Charging
Flip series Adaptive Fast Charging
Fold series Super Fast Charging

Check if you need Adaptive Fast Charge

Samsung uses two different types of fast charging. In our overview further below, you can see which device support which type of fast charging. Many devices from the A series have Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging (AFC). After half an hour of fast charging, your battery is charged for about 40%. If you want to charge it completely, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. With a slow charger it takes 2.5 hours or longer to fully charge. AFC is an existing fast charging technique that was adjusted by Samsung. So you don't necessarily need an original AFC adapter. A Quick Charge charger works just as good.

Check if you need Super Fast Charge

In 2019, Samsung introduced a new faster charging technique named Samsung Super Fast Charging (SFC). You only need to charge your battery for half an hour to be back up to 60%. You can find SFC on all new devices from the S and Note series, and on some devices from the A series. Our overview below shows exactly which device supports which type of fast charging technique. SFC is based on the Power Delivery protocol, so devices with SFC can also charge with Power Delivery chargers. Super Fast Charging is faster though, it takes about 70 minutes to fully charge, which takes 90 minutes with Power Delivery.

Choose a charger with the right power

Charging is faster with a higher power, but only if your smartphone supports this power. Devices with Adaptive Fast Charging support charging with a maximum of 15W. This means your charger needs to deliver at least 15W to reach the maximum charging speed. A charger with a higher wattage isn't faster, but isn't harmful to your smartphone either. For Super Fast Charging, there are two chargers, a 25W and a 45W. Charging with 45W is about 10 minutes faster. Only the S23 Plus, S22 Plus, S23 Ultra, S22 Ultra, and S20 Ultra support this.

Make sure you have the right cable

Which cable you need differs per fast charging technique. Adaptive Fast Charging cables have a squared USB-A port. You can use the standard USB-A to USB-C cable for this. Super Fast Charging chargers have an oval USB-C port. If you want to charge with this one, you need a cable with 2 USB-C connectors. Don't you have your original charging cable anymore? Choose a charger with cable or buy a separate USB-C to USB-C charger. Note: the Samsung 45W charger only works with the included fast charging cable.

Also check chargers from other brands

Because Samsung uses adapted versions of Quick Charge and Power Delivery, you don't need an original Samsung charger per se. Devices with Adaptive Fast Charging can charge just as fast with an 18W Quick Charge charger. Does your device have Samsung Super Fast Charging? Use a Power Delivery charger with at least 18W. Charger with 30, 45, or 60W also work. Charger will never provide more power than your device can handle, so powerful chargers won't damage your battery.
