How do you choose the right road bike navigation?
Minimum requirements bike navigation
All our navigation systems for road bikes have the following:
- GPS: to track your speed, distance, and route.
- Screen size smaller than 3 inches: for as little resistance as possible.
- Option to connect a heart rate sensor: to cycle based on your heart rate.
- Option to connect to a cadence sensor: to measure your cadence per minute.
- Option to connect to speed sensor: for an accurate speed measurement, even with many tunnels and trees on the route.
ANT+ and Bluetooth
To connect a heart rate sensor, cadence sensor, and a speed sensor, your navigation system needs to have ANT+. This is a wireless connection that can make multiple connections. It's important that all the sensors have ANT+ too. With Bluetooth, you can connect 1 device to your bike navigation at a time. This can be a sensor, but also your smartphone, for example. This allows you to read your messages and incoming calls on the screen of your bike navigation. Or, you can choose a wireless headset to listen to spoken directions and keep your eyes on the road.
Heart rate monitor
The fact that you have the option to connect a heart rate chest strap doesn't mean that this is always included. Check this and order a heart rate chest strap separately if you want to know which heart rate zone you're training in. By training in the right heart rate zone, you can develop better endurance or strength. Keep in mind that the navigation and sensor need to have the same wireless connection, so either Bluetooth or ANT+.
Cadence sensor
The same applies for the cadence sensor, you can always connect one to your road bike navigation, but it's not always included by default. Do you want to measure your cadence, so you can see if you're cycling in the right gear? Check if a cadence sensor is included. If not, purchase one separately. Make sure it works with the same wireless connection as the navigation system, either Bluetooth or ANT+.
Speed sensor
For an accurate speed measurement, you can connect a speed sensor. The speed measurement via the GPS of the device itself isn't always very accurate, because it depends on the GPS signal. The signal might be lost while riding through tunnels or a forest. The speed measurement via GPS also doesn't take traffic light into account, for example. Due to this, your average speed is lower. A speed sensor doesn't have these issues. Choose a speed sensor that has the same wireless connection as the navigation system, either Bluetooth or ANT+.
Strava Live Segments
Strava is one of the most popular training apps among cyclists. With Strava, you can save all your trainings and share them with others. But cycling with Strava Live Segments makes it even more fun to train. With a premium subscription, you'll receive live notifications during your workout about your performance in comparison to previous performances or that of others on the same road or route. That way, you'll know if you can get a new record or need to step up your game right away.
