How do you choose a coffee grinder?
Choose a coffee grinder
You're a coffee enthusiast and looking for a good coffee grinder, but what should you keep in mind? Answer the following question:
- Which bean hopper is suitable for you?
- What kind of coffee do you want to use the coffee grinder for?
- How many grind settings do you want?
- Do you want to collect the ground coffee in a container or in the portafilter?
Which bean hopper is suitable for you?
The larger the bean hopper, the less often you have to refill it. Makes sense, right? If you leave the coffee beans in the bean hopper too long, they'll become less fresh. If you want to keep your beans fresh, we recommend a UV-resistant bean hopper. With a fully airtight bean hopper, you retain all the right aromas of the beans and can leave your beans in the bean hopper for longer.
A 250g bean hopper is ideal for a 2-person household, so you have to refill the beans once a week.
Which coffee specialty do you use the bean hopper for?
Every brewing method requires a different grind size. The grind size for an espresso is different than for filter coffee. An espresso is brewed made in about 30 seconds. As a result, the aromas and flavors are released in a short time. With filter coffee, it's the opposite. When you brew a pot of filter coffee, the extraction time is multiple minutes, so the flavors and aromas are released slowly. Check which grind you should use for which coffee preparation below:
- Espresso - fine
- Percolator - medium
- Filter coffee - coarse
- French press - very coarse
How many grind settings do you want?
The grind size of your coffee is very important, as it ensures the right extraction time. If you want to make coffee specialties, we recommend an electric coffee grinder with many grind settings from coarse to fine. This way, the machine always grinds the coffee beans accurately and evenly. The more grind settings your bean hopper has, the more you can influence the grind. You can experiment with the grind size to find out how it affects your coffee flavor.
How do you want to collect the ground coffee?
Coffee grinders often have a container or portafilter holder. A container allows you to collect coffee for multiple coffee specialties, such as filter coffee, espresso, or a French press. A coffee grinder with a portafilter holder is mostly suitable for a piston machine. You can easily place the piston in the holder so the coffee falls into the portafilter. This way, you can make coffee right away. That's why a coffee grinder with a portafilter is very suitable for a home barista. Some coffee grinders have both functions.
