Description

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a light-sensitive lens for Canon SLR cameras with an EF-mount. Thanks to the large maximum aperture of f/1.8, you can take photos with background blur and focus on your object. This allows you to take beautiful portrait photos. The stepping motor (STM) makes the lens suitable for both photography and videography. You can smoothly and silently focus on your object with this autofocus motor. As a result, you won't have interfering noise in your videos.

Our expert review

The ideal portrait lens for budding photographers

  • Good value for money
  • Sharp photos, even in low light
  • Natural background blur with f/1.8
  • No image stabilization to reduce motion blur

With this lens I take razor-sharp portrait photos, in both dark and light situations. This is due to the large aperture of f/1.8. This also creates a nice blurred background. The lens is nice and compact, so I can take it with me everywhere. I don't go out without this 50mm lens. Not only do you take portrait photos with it, but it is also suitable for reportage or documentary photography. You cannot zoom with this prime lens. I use this lens on the Canon EOS 850D, with a crop factor of 1.6. razor-sharp photos Since this lens cannot zoom, it is optimized for 1 focal length. That means you have a high image quality. I notice this when I photograph my rabbit, the hairs of his fur and his eyes are very sharp. I shoot indoors and can make the aperture big enough so that enough light comes in. The lens does not have image stabilization to reduce motion blur. If I want to use slower shutter speeds, I need a tripod. Natural background blur With the aperture of f/1.8 I create a nice blurred background. I often use this for portrait photography. This way the model comes out more in the photo. I accurately determine the focus with the focus ring. The ring does not turn completely smoothly and silently I think. When I turn the ring, I hear a soft sound. This is a disadvantage for videographers, because you may hear this in your recordings. This can also be due to the many uses. If you don't want to focus manually, use the AF mode. This also works fine. Compact design Because the lens is very compact and light, I take it everywhere. I really like portrait and street photography, for which this lens is very suitable. It fits easily in my bag and because the lens is so light, I don't get cramps in my neck or hands easily. This makes the lens pleasant to use. I find that the focal length of 50mm is also very versatile.

Huge progress!

  • firmer
  • Faster
  • quieter

The lens has been greatly improved. If you look at its predecessor: 1. The lens is quieter and focuses faster 2. Feels more solid. Basic lens for every photographer! Less plastic, but just as fantastic!

Good price/quality

  • price quality
  • image quality
  • strong low light performance
  • build quality remains very basic

This is clearly an entry-level model. For less than half the price of the 1.4 you get a very good lens. Image quality is without a doubt very good. Build quality is all in all decent. You will retain some noise when focusing, but this is certainly not disturbing when taking photos. Otherwise a very nice lens for portraits, still lifes, general photography,... I use this lens on a 700D and I like it at least as much as the 18-135mm that I now use as a zoom lens for outdoor shots.
