How do you choose the right trimmer?

You can cut your hair short with a trimmer, but it's difficult to choose the right one with so many different types. Do you need a beard trimmer, hair clippers, or a multi-purpose trimmer to achieve the desired result? And what should you keep in mind when choosing the right trimmer? In this article, we'll explain how you can choose the best trimmer for you.

Choosing a trimmer

Trim beard and hair

When choosing the best trimmer for you, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do you want to trim?
  • Do you want to combine trimmers?
  • Which shaving lengths do you need?
  • Do you want separate comb attachments or an adjustable comb attachment?
  • Do you want a wide or a narrow trimming comb?

What do you want to trim?

Beard trimmer

Beard: beard trimmer

If you only want to trim your beard, a beard trimmer is a good choice. A beard trimmer has a smaller blade than hair clippers. This way, you can also trim the hard to reach places. A beard trimmer is less suitable to for the hair on your head. That's because the motor is less powerful than that of hair clippers. As a result, the trimmer may pull your hair and you won't get an even result.

  • Ideal for your beard
  • Also suitable for detailing and shaving, depending on attachments.
  • Less suitable for hair on your head and body.
Hybrid trimmer

Beard and body: hybrid trimmer

A hybrid trimmer is multi-purpose, because you can trim, shave, and detail beard with this product. Use the trimmer without the comb attachment if you want to detail your beard. The small head helps you to create clean lines. The blades never touch the skin, neither with nor without the comb attachment. This prevents skin irritation and means you'll still feel stubble, but won't see it. Do you want a longer beard or to trim other body parts? Use a beard comb or specific body comb.

  • Ideal for your beard and body hair.
  • Suitable for detailing, trimming, and shaving.
  • Less suitable for the hair on your head and intimate zones.
Multi-purpose trimmer

Beard, head, and body hair: multi-purpose trimmer

A multi-purpose trimmer is a combination of different trimmers. You use most multi-purpose trimmers as a beard trimmer, or as hair clippers. This is useful when you like to cut the hair on your head as well. With a multi-purpose trimmer, you get different comb attachments that are each suitable for a different body part. Depending on the comb attachments, you can also use a multi-purpose trimmer to trim your body hair.

  • Ideal for your beard, head, and body hair.
  • Also suitable for detailing and shaving, depending on attachments.
  • Less suitable for the details.
Hair clippers

Hair: hair clippers

You use hair clippers to give yourself a new haircut. Hair clippers have a powerful motor, so you can effortlessly trim even the thickest hair. In addition, hair clippers are larger than a beard trimmer and they have a wider cutting blade. Because of the size of the blade, hair clippers are less suitable for detailing your beard and creating clean lines.

  • Ideal for the hair on your head.
  • Also suitable for detailing and shaving, depending on attachments.
  • Less suitable for your beard due to wide trimmer comb.
Nose trimmer

Nose and ear hair: nose trimmer

Do you want to look well-groomed and trim your nose hair, ear hair, and perhaps your eyebrows as well? A trimmer with a nose trimmer or nose trimmer attachment would be a good choice. Does your favorite trimmer not include such an attachment? You can also buy a separate nose trimmer.

  • Ideal for your nose and ear hair.
  • Also suitable for your eyebrows with comb attachment.
  • Only suitable for small surfaces.
Body groomer

Body hair: body groomer

If you want to trim your body hair, you use a body groomer. These devices have both a trimmer function and a shaving function. This way, you can trim your armpit with a body groomer, shave your chest, or trim your intimate zones. Most body groomers have special attachments for the sensitive parts on your body. This helps to prevent skin irritation or cuts.

  • Ideal for body hair.
  • Also suitable for detailing and shaving, depending on attachments.
  • Less suitable for your beard and the hair on your head.

Want to combine trimmers?

Do you want to trim the hair on your head as well as your beard? The combination of a hybrid trimmer and hair clippers is a good choice. With the large trimmer comb of the hair clippers, it's hard to detail. This is where the hybrid trimmer comes in handy.

If the head of the beard trimmer is too large for certain spots, you can use the nose trimmer. The little head lets you easily remove the hairs from your nose and ears. The special eyebrow comb helps you to trim our eyebrows as well.

  • For your beard, nose, and ear hair.
  • Also suitable for eyebrows, depending on comb attachment.
  • Not suitable for your head and body hair.
Body groomer and beard trimmer

With these 2 products, you can trim and shave both your beard and unwanted body hair. This way, you're sure to head out well-groomed. The beard trimmer is specialized in trimming the beard hairs. The body groomer adds a shaving function to this, so you can also go for a smooth shave.

  • For both your beard and body hair.
  • Also suitable for shaving and detailing, depending on attachment.
  • Less suitable for the hair on your head.

Which shaving lengths do you need?

Short shaving length beard

Short: up to 3mm

The shaving lengths you need depends on the result you want to achieve. Do you want stubble or a buzzcut? A length up to 3mm is suitable. For a shorter beard or short haircut, you want to use up to 10mm. A completely smooth shave isn't possible with a trimmer. You'll need an electric shaver or a trimmer with shaving function for this.

Medium-length shaving length beard

Medium length: up to 20mm

For a medium-length beard or haircut, you need shaving lengths of 5mm to 20mm. It's a good idea to choose a trimmer that has multiple length settings with small steps. This way, you can create a nice fade in your beard or haircut.

Long shaving length hair

Long: at least 20mm

Do you want a longer beard or longer haircut? We recommend a trimmer that has a minimum shaving length of 10mm. The maximum length for a trimmer for long hair is about 35mm and higher.

Do you want separate comb attachments or an adjustable comb attachment?

Comb attachment with fixed shaving length

Fixed comb attachments

A trimmer with fixed comb attachments includes several comb attachments. You set the shaving length by clicking one of these comb attachments onto the trimmer. If you choose a trimmer with fixed comb attachments, you have to pay close attention to the shaving lengths. Do you want to create a fade? In that case, it's important that the difference between the comb attachments isn't more than 1mm.

Slider adjustable shaving length comb attachment

Adjustable comb attachments

Trimmers with an adjustable comb attachment can be set via a slider or dial on the trimmer. This means you don't have to work with different comb attachments to determine the shaving length. An advantage of a trimmer with an adjustable comb attachment is that you can often adjust the shaving length with a precision of half a millimeter. This makes it easier to create a fade in your beard or hairstyle.

Do you want a wide or narrow trimmer comb?

Trimmer

The width of the trimmer comb affects the result you achieve. A trimmer with a wide trimmer comb, like hair clippers, is more suitable for rough work than for detailing. Before you make a decision, it's important to determine whether you only want to trim your hair shorter or make a shaved line, for example.
