Pros and cons

According to our MIDI keyboard expert
  • Thanks to the touch-sensitive keys, the keyboard registers hard and soft keystrokes.
  • You connect a foot pedal to the keyboard to extend the keystrokes.
  • If you provide the MIDI keyboard with 2 AA batteries, use the keyboard with your iPad.
  • The MIDI keyboard has no programmable buttons or faders.
  • You can not connect the keyboard to your hardware via a 5-pin MIDI connector.

Description

With the Korg MicroKEY 2 - 37 you record keyboard melodies with your computer or iOS device. Thanks to the 37 velocity-sensitive keys, the keyboard distinguishes hard from soft keystrokes. This way you play melodies with a lot of feeling. You connect a foot pedal to the 6.3 mm jack. With a foot pedal you extend keystrokes. This works the same as with an acoustic piano. You have the time to reposition your hand position. Do you want to use the keyboard with your iOS device? Then insert 2 AA batteries into the keyboard and connect it to your iPad or iPhone.

Solid and compact midi controller

  • Compact
  • A nice touch for a small midi keyboard
  • Good velocity sensitivity

Everything I was looking for in a compact housing. Due to its shape, it fits nicely between my keyboard and screens on my desk. After getting used to it, it is nice to play, and you can control the touch strength well. After this purchase I was able to try the keys of a few other midi keyboards, but these all felt significantly less good.

For those who have not worked with midi controllers before: software is included to get you started. Included is, among other things, M1 Le: an easy-to-use stand-alone software synthesizer, with which you can quickly get good sound from your computer together with this (and/or another) midi keyboard. It allows you to play and modify a variety of instruments and sounds including piano, drums and flute, and you can combine several of these sounds together.

I personally find it a very handy keyboard to compose music more easily - my goal with this purchase. Included is Reason Limited, with which you can start composing music (a DAW - Digital Audio Workstation software). This software initially seems nice to use and quick to learn. This is limited in, among other things, the amount of instrument tracks that you can add (max. 8 instruments + 8 audio tracks). However, this should be enough for beginners. Unfortunately, as far as I can see you can't use VST within this version of Reason. There are already quite a few fine sounds/instruments built in.

I myself have stayed with LMMS in terms of DAW for the time being: a free open source software without these kinds of restrictions, but less easy to get started with. Nice to this is that you can add the supplied M1 Le as a virtual instrument (VSTi).

An overview of the supplied software can be found at the korg license center. There is also more software for iOS. Unfortunately, there are only apps available for iPads and iPhones, not Android. As an Android user I think this is a shame. I would also have found these apps very useful.. Anyway, all the included software is kind of a bonus on the real product, and I'm very happy with that anyway!

Good simple keyboard but too small keys for my purpose

  • Small and handy
  • Keys too small if you are used to a normal piano keyboard.

I use the keyboard as input for writing music. It's good enough for that purpose at 37 keys. It worked immediately after connecting via USB as it should. After a few hours of working with it, I started to get annoyed by the small size of the keys. If you are used to a normal piano keyboard you will trip over your own fingers.
The assessment of sound quality is irrelevant for a midi keyboard that does not produce any sound itself.
